There
remain only 13 natural wild brown trout fisheries of consequence
in Europe. Of these 12 are located in Ireland. This small number
of relatively large, pristine, shallow, alkaline lakes capable
of supporting large stocks of wild brown trout are the only fisheries
of their kind left in Western Europe.Lough Sheelin is
one of these.
Results Stream Re-Hab Competition
2007
''The second annual
stream rehabilitation flyfishing competition organised by The Lough Sheelin
Trout Protection Association took place on Saturday the 6th of October. There
was a large entry of 108 boats with 216 anglers taking part from all over
Ireland. The weather conditions were difficult with thick fog until lunch
time and a flat calm for the rest of the day. Anglers reported that although
plenty of rising fish were seen they were shy and reluctant to rise to
the artificial fly. Fourteen keepable fish were nevertheless bagged with
first prize of a Lough Sheelin 19 foot boat going to Gary Stewart of Derry
with a fine wild Lough Sheelin brownie of 2 lb 2 oz. Second prize with
a fish of 1 lb 12 oz went to Jim Condron of County Meath third to Geoffrey
Hylands of County Down. Fourth prize went to one of many lady entrants,
Linda Straghan of Armagh who won what must be a unique prize for a fishing
competition, a lawnmower donated by PJ Callan of Ardee!
Money collected from the entrance fees will be used to improve the spawning
beds and rivers for the Lough Sheelin trout. Evidence of an improvement
in the stocks of large brown trout as a result of previous spawning enhancement
work is already being seen in the improved angling returns on
Lough Sheelin during the 2007 season as a whole.''
